Toddler Photo Sessions

If you ask a photographer what the best stages are to photograph babies and children most will say newborn, 6 months, 1 year, and then 4 years old and up. But wait, did we skip 2 and 3 year olds? If you have a 2 or 3 year old you know exactly why this is…they won’t stay in one spot for more than a quarter of a second, they are into everything, and if you want their attention just forget it…they have better things to see and touch! But the 2-3 year old range is when they start growing out of the ‘baby’ stage and enter into the ‘little kid’ stage trying to be so independent and learn as much as they can by exploring…it must be captured.

The youngest of my 4 kids is currently 2 years old and fits this description perfectly, as did my other 3 at this age. Regardless, parents like myself still want amazing pictures of our toddlers, and want to capture their budding personalities to treasure forever. I started thinking outside the box when my little guy Caleb was getting ready to turn 2. Outdoor images with toddlers are no problem as I just act really goofy and follow them around everywhere…but I really wanted studio photos of him. Then it occurred to me…what is a toddler’s favorite thing to do?? GET MESSY! I brought Caleb into the studio and poured finger paint on the floor of my backdrop in front of him and let him do what he loves best. I was able to get the most natural smiles and expressions from him while he had a blast and stayed in ONE spot the entire time! He had a blast and his personality was able to shine through in the pictures…and best yet, I was able to document this fun loving age doing what he loved to do.

With the wheels moving in my head I put out a model call for more 2 year olds. My goal was to see how other 2 year old reacted to this same type of session and truly know what to expect from different toddlers. As you can see with the images below the verdict was clear, it was a success! We will now be offering these finger painting sessions in the studio for ages 18 months – 3 years and siblings are more than welcome to participate as well if you wish.
