The Importance of Family Portraits | Washington DC Family Photographer

I’ve never met a person that has not enjoyed viewing pictures from the past. When we were children everyone loved to look at the photographs of our parents and grandparents when they were children, or perhaps young adults starting their own family. There is something so magical about seeing a glimpse of what life was like then. It gives us perspective and provides context of that exact moment in time.

There is something fascinating about looking at your father with a mullet from the 1970’s, or your grandparents standing next to an old car that looks like something from a Charlie Chapman film. Parents understand how fast time escapes our grasp. Those early toddler days are quickly replaced with pre-teen dramas which soon usher in the high school year at which point our family time is rapidly beginning to dwindle. This is why it is so important for us parents to capture the special moments in not only our children’s lives, but also with the life of our family. Any parent with a camera can snap photos of our children, but rarely are we able to take a photograph that includes the entire family.

As a photographer I can take a million pictures of my children, but I cannot fully capture my family as I’m constantly standing behind the camera. For this reason I hire a photographer every year to photograph my family so that we may all share the spotlight of the camera lens. These photographs are so important to capture these precious moments because in a blink of an eye your baby will be a teenager begging to borrow the keys to Dad’s car.

If you haven’t invested in a family session with a professional photographer lately, take the time to book one. In life we can’t turn back the clock, but we can freeze the precious moments and capture the magic of time through family pictures; pictures that one day our grandchildren will be enjoying as they take a glimpse into the past.
