30 Faces of Autism – Day 30 | Maryland Child Photographer | Autism Awareness

With 1 in 68 individuals diagnosed with autism it’s pretty certain everyone is affected by it in one way or another. Whether it’s affected you personally, your child, sibling, parent, grandchild, friend, neighbor, coworker, or beyond…chances are you know at least one person with autism. Acceptance is about more than just awareness. Being aware is easy, but being accepting requires effort.

Jessica is 16 years old and in the 10th grade. She has 2 foster sisters and 1 foster brother in Guatemala, 2 dogs and 1 cat. She was diagnosed with autism when she was 3 years old.

Jessica likes playing soccer and is a great writer. Her favorite subject in school is writing, and her least favorite is social studies. She loves cheeseburgers and filet mignon, but doesn’t like milk and broccoli. She’s really good at playing video games and communication.

Jessica’s favorite place to go is school and church. Her favorite memory was when Justin Timberlake said happy birthday to her. She doesn’t like making people uncomfortable, and is undecided on what she wants to be when she grows up.

Her greatest struggles have been social interaction and social anxiety. She has troubles staying focused and being impulsive. She often demonstrates attention-seeking behavior among her friends, who find her very entertaining.

Jessica was adopted from Guatemala as an infant and has had a hard time fitting in from the very beginning. She is very compassionate and has a strong faith in God.
